When we came up with our delicious rice paper Vegan Bacon it really was a game changer. Breakfast has never been the same since! Who would have thought that something as boring and simple as rice paper could be turned into something as tasty and satisfying as bacon!!
Our vegan bacon recipe is so flavourful and crisps up so nicely in the oven, you can use it in place of traditional bacon. Serve it with our Scrambled Tofu, add it to your next sandwich, crumble it as bacon bits on our Caesar Salad, or eat it straight as a crunchy afternoon snack.
When making rice paper bacon, it really couldn’t be any easier or any quicker, but it can burn very easily. This recipe makes crispy bacon, but if you like it a little chewier just remove it from the oven a little earlier. Listen to the recipe when it says a cook time of 8 minutes, flipping halfway through. Don’t skip out on the flipping and if you need to cook it longer, do it 1 carefully minute at a time.
Crispy bacon really is the only way to eat bacon if you ask us, but we’ve come to learn that bacon can be a real controversial topic (our husbands like to disagree with our crispy-bacon-is-best attitudes). Do you like your bacon crispy or chewy?
- 8 pieces Rice Paper
- 2 tbsp Olive Oil
- 2 tbsp Nutritional Yeast
- 3 tbsp Soy Sauce
- 2 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tbsp BBQ Sauce
- 1 tbsp Maple Syrup
- 1/4 tsp Ground Black Pepper
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Paprika
- 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
Preheat oven to 400F.
Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.
In a bowl add the olive oil, nutritional yeast, soy sauce, garlic powder, bbq sauce, maple syrup, pepper, salt, paprika and onion powder. Whisk until completely combined and set aside.
Lay 1 piece of rice paper onto a large cutting board and lightly brush the entire piece of paper with water. Lay the second piece of rice paper directly on top, pushing down to seal the 2 pieces together. Apply more water to the edges as necessary to ensure they are completely sealed.
Brush each side of the rice paper circle with the marinade until completely covered, and cut into 1 inch thick strips. Assemble strips on a baking sheet.
Repeat with the remaining 6 pieces of rice paper, using all of the marinade on the bacon strips.
Place bacon into the preheated oven and bake for 8 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Keep a close eye on the bacon to ensure they do not burn.
Serve and enjoy!
