Finding cruelty-free makeup is one of the hardest parts of being vegan. Most things have gotten easier as time passes, but finding cosmetic products that are vegan, cruelty-free, and that I like are still a challenge. LUSH’s Eyes Right Mascara certainly fits the bill, but it wasn’t an easy or a love-at-first-sight find.
You know the question, “If you’re ever abandoned on an island and you can only have one thing, what would it be?” My answer is mascara! I rarely leave the house without mascara, it’s really the extra ‘umph’ that finishes off any look.
Before I went vegan
I had been using my favourite non-cruelty-free mascara for as long as I can remember and I loved it, so when the time came to shop for a new mascara that met my expectations I was quite worried. It took me a long time to find a mascara that I loved and that was cruelty-free. The hardest part is that so many companies claim to be cruelty-free, yet don’t align with my belief of what that means. I talk more about that in my post on cruelty-free products.
LUSH to the rescue
I don’t remember how I first heard about LUSH mascara, but I do remember that when I saw it for the first time I was less than ecstatic. The bottle was small, and there was no applicator. Nevertheless, I gave it a try and am so grateful that I did! I cannot stress how much I LOVE this product.
LUSH Eyes Right Mascara is what I would call blackest black, which is key. The mascara goes on beautifully leaves you with individually coated long lashes, as opposed to lashes clumped together. I wear this mascara to work, and for a night out on the town I just add an extra layer (or two). I have never had the mascara flake off or run down under my eyes as the day goes on. This mascara is also a great option for someone with sensitive eyes, as mascara often makes my eyes itchy but I have never had an issue with this product.
The downside to Lush Eyes Right Mascara
The downsides to this mascara is that it only comes in a 5g bottle, which is smaller than your average mascara. Given that I sometimes need to add 2 or 3 coats for eveningwear I do find I run out quicker than with previous brands. Brigette would love if they made a bigger option so I could stop dragging her to LUSH so often!
The other downside, and it’s a big one, is the length of the brush is absolutely brutal. The mascara comes in a tear dropper type bottle and the applicator brush is so short and stubby I find it next to impossible to use. I have an old mascara brush that I keep to apply it… LUSH if you ever read this PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEE change the bottle and the length of the brush!
The bottom line
This mascara is $19.95 and I personally think it’s great value for the price! Though you get less than a bottle that would cost around the same, there are non-quantitative factors to consider, like the impact on the environment and the fact that it is 100% cruelty-free.
If you try the LUSH Eyes Right mascara I would love to know what you think!
