Earth Day 2019

Home » Earth Day 2019

April 21, 2019 //  by Sigourney//  Leave a Comment

On April 22, 2019 Earth Day will mark its 49th year of bringing awareness to environmental issues, and uniting the world towards a unified cause. Last year was all about reducing the use of plastic – and we’ve seen some progress from major companies! This year, Earth Day 2019, is focused on protecting endangered species. So what can you do to start taking action?

Don’t forget about your 2018 pledge

First, before we start looking at how to action the 2019 goal, it’s important to not forget the issues raised in 2018. Single use plastics are still an issue, and it takes all of us to reduce our impact. That’s why we are still committing to ourselves to continue to find plastic alternatives and reduce our waste.

Earth Day 2019 goals

For Earth Day 2019, there are 4 major pillars:

  1. Educate and raise awareness about the accelerating rate of extinction of millions of species (and why)
  2. Achieve major policy victories that protect broad groups of species as well as individual species and their habitats
  3. Build and activate a global movement that embraces nature and its values
  4. Encourage individual actions such as adopting plant based diet and stopping pesticide and herbicide use.

We love these four goals, and while we fully support all four, we personally feel we have the most opportunity to help with ways to action on three & four.

How to embrace nature and its values

Nature is simply beautiful. But, it can be easy to forget that it’s up to us to take care of it. It’s so easy to get bogged down in your daily life, but it’s worth it to take a moment to reflect on what we have!

Whether you live in a big city or in the country, it’s important to get out in to nature. It’s so easy to take for granted the things we have around us. Take time to walk through a park, or go camping for a weekend, and just really take in the beauty of nature. If you remind yourself just how precious it is, the easier it is to think about doing your part to save it.

We also love building our own little eco-system at our homes! We have both gone a little plant crazy, but the more greenery we add to our homes, the more we think about how much we need it in our lives. Aside from cleaning the air and prettying up the place, they just bring us so much joy! Just like getting outside in to nature. So why not try bringing the outside to you?

Adopting a Plant Based Diet

Obviously, this is something we both live by. And though at first the transition was hard, neither of us would look back. We love how we feel, and we love what our lifestyle brings to the earth. After all, it may seem like a little change, but a little bit can go a long way!

The best thing is to encourage those around you to just keep an open mind and try different types of food. The more you can educate others on how good vegan and plant-based foods are, and how easy it is, the more people will start to make changes. Just remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and we can’t expect everyone to transition over night.

Whether you follow Earth Day closely or not, it’s a great opportunity to think about our actions and how they impact the world. As long a you’re making small changes in your daily life, it helps. You don’t need to be perfect, you just need to try. We love that Earth Day 2019 is focusing on saving animals. as this is a major reason for our lifestyles, and we are excited to see the positive changes.
